At the start of December we asked you all to help us out and vote in our 2nd Annual Frighties, our end-of-year horror film awards. We had 15 categories with 4 nominations in each category covering the usual Best Film, Best Director, Best Writing etc but we also added a few interesting ones like Best One Liner and Best Kill.
Well the response was amazing yet again. Even better than our first year. You all showed up and cast your votes and we are very happy to announce the winners in each category below.
BEST FILM: Talk To Me
Other Nominees: When Evil Lurks, Infinity Pool, Pearl
BEST DIRECTOR: Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise)
Other Nominees: Demián Rugna (When Evil Lurks), Danny & Michael Philippou (Talk To Me), Brandon Cronenberg (Infinity Pool)
Lee Cronin ended up winning by a decent margin in the end although it was very close in the beginning with Demián Rugna going ahead early on.
BEST ACTOR: Russell Crowe (The Pope's Exorcist)
Other Nominees: Alexander Skarsgård (Infinity Pool), Ezequiel Rodriguez (When Evil Lurks), Tobin Bell (Saw X)
BEST ACTRESS: Mia Goth (Pearl)
Other Nominees: Sophie Wilde (Talk To Me), Sophie Thatcher (The Boogeyman), Felicity Kyle Napuli (In My Mother's Skin)
We're not going to lie, we were surprised Crowe pipped Skarsgård (last year's winner) to the post for a role that has received mixed reviews but you all had your say so fair play. For the second year in a row Mia Goth takes the award for Best Actress. Although it wasn't quite as close as last year, Sophie Wilde gave Mia a really good run for her money.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Dave Bautista (Knock at the Cabin)
Other Nominees: Kyle Gallner (The Passenger), Matthew Lillard (Five Nights at Freddy's), Hemky Madera (Satanic Hispanics)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Alyssa Sutherland (Evil Dead Rise)
Other Nominees: Silvina Sabater (When Evil Lurks), Tina Fey (A Haunting in Venice), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Scream VI)
BEST WRITING: Danny Philippou & Bill Hinzman (Talk To Me)
Other Nominees: Demián Rugna (When Evil Lurks), Ari Aster (Beau Is Afraid), Brandon Cronenberg (Infinity Pool)
Alyssa Sutherland completely ran away with it in her category with the 2nd biggest winning margin of the entire awards with 71%. Demián Rugna once again is pipped right at the end by the writing team behind Talk To Me. This year has been a good battle between the indie Australian possession film and the indie Argentinian possession film.
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: Stephen McKeon (Evil Dead Rise)
Other Nominees: Drum & Lace (Cobweb), Sven Faulconer & Brian Tyler (Scream VI), Joseph Bishara (Insidious: The Red Door)
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Eliot Rocket (Pearl)
Other Nominees: Philip Lozano (Cobweb), Haris Zambarloukos (A Haunting in Venice), Russell Adam Morton (In My Mother's Skin)
BEST VILLAIN: Ellie from Evil Dead Rise (Alyssa Sutherland)
Other Nominees: M3gan from M3GAN (Amie Donald, Jenna Davis), Pearl from Pearl (Mia Goth), Jigsaw from Saw X (Tobin Bell)
BEST KILL: Scalping at the Cabin (Evil Dead Rise)
Other Nominees: Barge to the Face (Thanksgiving), Eyeball Trap (Saw X), Heart Ripped Out (God of Death, V/H/S/85)
Another worthy award for Alyssa Sutherland as the villainous Ellie from Evil Dead Rise. The Best Kill category kept flipping between Evil Dead Rise's epic opening scalping and the shocking Barge to the Face kill from the parade scene in Thanksgiving. It was close but the Evil Dead fans just pushed it over the edge in the last few days.
BEST SCARE: Little Girl vs Big Dog (When Evil Lurks)
Other Nominees: First Ghost Reveal (Talk To Me), CAT Scan Machine (Insidious: The Red Door), Ring Ring (Skinamarink)
BEST MAKE-UP/CREATURE EFFECTS: Evil Dead Rise
Other Nominees: When Evil Lurks, Five Nights At Freddy's, Haunted Mansion
BEST ONE LINER: "Mommy's With The Maggots Now!" (Evil Dead Rise)
Other Nominees: "No. I'm A Star. Please! I'm A Star!" (Pearl), "If She Did Do Blowjobs, She'd Still Be Alive" (Totally Killer), "It Never Works Out For The Dipshit In The Mask" (Scream VI)
BEST TV/STREAMING SHOW: The Fall of the House of Usher (Netflix)
Other Nominees: The Last of Us (HBO), Chucky Season 3 Part 1 (SYFY, USA Network), Creepshow Season 4 (Shudder)
We knew that one liner from Evil Dead Rise was gonna be hard to beat but we didn't think it would win by the margin it did with 78% of the votes. Although The Last of Us got loads of votes too it was going to be difficult to catch Mike Flanagan's The Fall of the House of Usher after it took such a significant lead when voting officially began.
Congratulations to all the winners and of course all the other nominees too. Thanks again for participating and we hope to bring you another bunch of nominations celebrating the horror genre next December in our 3rd Annual Frighties Awards.
