3rd Annual Frighties Awards: THE WINNERS

At the start of December we asked you all to help us out and vote in our 3rd Annual Frighties, our end-of-year horror film awards. We had 15 categories with 4 nominations in each category covering Best Film, Best Director, Best Writing and Acting categories but we also added a few interesting ones like Best Scare, Best One Liner and Best Kill.

Well the response was amazing yet again. The most votes we've received so far. This is getting bigger every year we do it. You all showed up and cast your votes and we are very happy to announce the winners in each category below.

Frighties Awards

BEST DIRECTOR: Coralie Fargeat (The Substance)

Other nominees: Jane Schoenbrun (I Saw the TV Glow), Osgood Perkins (Longlegs), Tilman Singer (Cuckoo)

BEST FILM: The Substance

Other nominees: I Saw the TV Glow, Longlegs, Cuckoo

The Substance dominated the nominations this year with a total of 9 noms over the 15 categories so no surprises that it has also dominated the winner's circle. It won with 57% of the vote and Coralie won her Frightie with 46% of the vote.

Demi Moore in The Substance

BEST ACTRESS: Demi Moore (The Substance)

Other nominees: Hunter Schafer (Cuckoo), Maika Monroe (Longlegs), Nell Tiger Free (The First Omen)

BEST ACTOR: David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil)

Other nominees: Enzo Vogrincic (Society of the Snow), Josh Hartnett (Trap), Nicolas Cage (Longlegs)

The Best Actress category started off quite close then as predicted Demi Moore stormed ahead. She finished with way over half of the winning votes. A bigger margin than Mia Goth last year. The Best Actor was a lot closer with Cage taking the early lead. However Dastmalchian caught up quickly and stayed ahead to the end.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Margaret Qualley (The Substance)

Other nominess: Catherine O'Hara (Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice), Katy O'Brien (Love Lies Bleeding), Elizabeth Debicki (MaXXXine)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus)

Other nominees: Dan Stevens (Cuckoo), Joseph Quinn (A Quiet Place: Day One), Kyle Gallner (Smile 2)

You may be starting to see a pattern here. Horror fans REALLY enjoyed The Substance and they want to make sure you all know it. Congatulations to Margaret Qualley, she pipped Catherine O'Hara by 6 votes. And congrats to David Jonsson too who had to work alot harder to win this one. One of the tightest categories this year for sure.

BEST WRITING: Coralie Fargeat (The Substance)

Other nominess: Jane Schoenbrun (I Saw the TV Glow), Rose Glass & Weronika Tofilska (Love Lies Bleeding), Dominic O'Neill (Haunted Ulster: Live)

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: Raffertie (The Substance)

Other nominees: Benjamin Wallfisch (Alien: Romulus), Michael Giacchino (Society of the Snow), Alex G (I Saw the TV Glow)

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Benjamin Kracun (The Substance)

Other nominees: Andres Arochi (Longlegs), Aaron Morton (The First Omen), Paula Huidobro (Lisa Frankenstein)

Not going to lie here, we were pulling for local fella Dominic O'Neill in the Best Writing category but had a feeling this would be another landslide once the voting began. Quite surpised by the Original Score result. If you listened to our Frighties podcast episode then you'll know that we thought it would be a two horse race between Wallfisch and Giacchino. The Best Cinematography category was a very close race throughout. We think any of the nominees could've been worthy winners.

BEST VILLAIN: Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton, Terrifier 3)

Other nominees: Longlegs (Nic Cage, Longlegs), Lou Sr (Ed Harris, Love Lies Bleeding), Harvey (Dennis Quaid, The Substance)

BEST KILL: Chainsaw Shower (Terrifier 3)

Other nominees: Yoga Time (In A Violent Nature), Father Harris Sliced (The First Omen), Jesus Nail in the Neck (Immaculate)

So you're telling me The Substance was nominated and DIDN'T win??? We are shooketh! Let's be honest, nobody was going to defeat Art the Clown in these two categories right? It's definitely been Art's year and it's so great to see a film franchise with such a humble beginning reach such a huge audience and receive an overwhelmingly positive reaction. Bring on Terrifier 4!

BEST SCARE: Meet Longlegs (Longlegs)

Other nominees: Apartment Stalker (Smile 2), Buried Alive (Azrael), Giving Birth (The First Omen)

BEST MAKE-UP/SPECIAL EFFECTS: The Substance & Terrifier 3

Other nominees: Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Longlegs

BEST ONE-LINER: "I think it was Dostoevsky that said it "Later fucker!" (Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice)

Other nominees: "Sammy those are fucking onions" (Abigail), "There's something in the water" (Alien: Romulus), "If Earth swallows us whole, I apologise in advance" (Late Night with the Devil)

BEST TV/STREAMING SHOW: Monsters - The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story

Other nominees: Agatha All Along, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, Interview with the Vampire

The last two categories were VERY close at the end with only a handful of votes seperating the number one and two choices in each. And for the first time ever we have a joint winner in any of the categories with The Substance and Terrifier 3 topping Best Make-Up/Special Effects. Absolute zero arguements there. Both teams invovled deserve all the praise for their amazing work.

Congratulations to all the winners and of course all the other nominees too. A massive thanks again to you all for participating. We couldn't do this without you and we hope to bring you another bunch of nominations celebrating the horror genre next December in our 4th Annual Frighties Awards. Happy New Year peeps and creeps!
